That lifts General Motors’ current model tally to 12 and Nissan’s to 3. The GEM and Whip belong to a class of golf cart-like vehicles that aren’t required to meet the same federal safety standards as passenger vehicles. The Volt and Leaf are the first mainstream electric cars the Institute has tested.

The NYPD already uses electric scooters and electric powered golf carts on boardwalks, in parks and some transit hubs. The FDNY and NYPD initially will use the vehicles for non-emergency duties, including use by NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents. The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric car being used by the NYPD.

The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. Before Tesla, they were seen as nerdy golf carts, far from usable as “real cars.”

Capitol Hill made for a strange sight earlier this week as it was surrounded by everything from two-seat sports cars to vehicles that resembled golf carts and bucket trucks. General Motors was among them with the line of Volt cars seen as the future for the company. Of course this wasn’t just a showcase event.
