Made from the residue left behind after production of gasoline, plastics, and other materials, asphalt still commands $700-800 per ton, or half the price of gasoline at $1,500 per ton, Wen estimates. In Iowa, for example, scientists are making a corn-based bioasphalt from residue left after the production of ethanol.

Project LIBERTY, sponsored by POET, LLC, will produce up to 25 million gallons of ethanol per year and will be located in Emmetsburg, Iowa. The project’s process uses enzymatic hydrolysis to convert waste into ethanol and will produce enough biogas to power both Project LIBERTY and POET’s adjacent grain-based ethanol plant.

Cellic CTec3 allows the cost of producing ethanol from biomass to approach the level of corn ethanol and gasoline, according to the company. Fiberight will open a small-scale plant in Lawrenceville, Virginia, this year, and a plant producing 6 million gallons per year in Blairstown, Iowa, in 2013.

It also partnered with Virent on biomass catalytic conversion to produce renewable gasoline, and Cellana (HR BioPetroleum) on algae biofuel. Additionally, the focus on waste feedstock can be reflected by its investments in the ill-fated Terrabon, which was focused on wet waste-to-gasoline.
