During this same time GM created Saturn , a totally new brand, which arrived in 1990 with its own showrooms, advertising and vehicles. For our discussion, Saturn dealers were the delivery and service point for GM’s aborted first electric car, the EV1. Rivian will be delivering all-electric pickups and SUVs very soon.

A number of startups showed off their porposals to retrofit the existing fleets of petroleum-fueled vehicles, giving some hope to Andy Grove’s ambitoious desire to create millions of plug-in conversions before the automakers deliver. Representatives of GM stoked the clamor for the Volt, and a Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid sat on the show floor.

The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. As part of the culling, GM has the option to re-badge vehicles from the non-core brands, such as the Pontiac G8, Opel Insignia and Saturn Vue. Retail sales were down 9% while fleet sales declined 47%. Non-core brand sales declined when compared with June as Pontiac dipped 7%; Saturn was down 21%, and HUMMER and Saab declined 26%. Light truck sales were led by the RAV4 compact SUV with best-ever July sales of 15,912 units, up 32.5% Monthly sales of hybrids.

The plug-in version will only be available for fleet service and will not be sold at retail to the general public. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model. The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid.
