Waste heat is used to generate electricity, making Enefit shale oil plants net producers of electricity. Eesti Energia’s subsidiary Enefit is developing two parallel oil shale projects in Jordan, where it acquired the exclusive right to develop, design, finance, construct and operate a 500 megawatt oil shale-fueled power station.

Global investment in renewable power and fuels (excluding large hydro-electric projects) was $270.2 Wind, solar, biomass and waste-to-power, geothermal, small hydro and marine power contributed an estimated 9.1% billion, a 10-year low; biomass and waste-to-energy dropping 10% to $8.4 billion set in 2011.
