Chevrolet next year will introduce the Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric car. The Volt runs on an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, but also has an onboard gasoline-powered charging system to help extend the cars range when a charging station isnt available.

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. The PHEV does not suffer from the “range anxiety” that limits other electrically-powered vehicles. The pure electric vehicles, for reserve, must carry heavy and expensive batteries—which add expense as well as weight—and must have access to high-powered recharging stations [ 1 ]. But the real story is yet to be told.
