The Ampera is an extended range electric vehicle based on the Voltec technology used in the Chevrolet Volt. Equipped with a 16 kWh Li-ion battery pack, the five-door, four-seat hatchback has a battery-powered range of up to 60 km (37 miles) (MVEG cycle). In Utah the posted limit is 80 mph and for many drivers that was only a suggestion. We set the cruise control to 72 mph when on the freeway. A comparable SUV, such as a 2023 Ford Explorer AWD with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an EPA highway rating of 26 miles per gallon, would have used 69 gallons of gasoline.

Newer EVs have larger battery capacities, allowing for longer ranges and protecting against performance losses.
