The 2017 model of the Porsche 919 Hybrid deploys a range of new innovations, particularly in the vehicle’s aerodynamics, the chassis and the combustion engine. The second-generation Porsche Team 919 Hybrids ( earlier post) took first and second place at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans (the 83 rd running). The winning Porsche led the race from the ninth hour. Porsche’s win came 17 years after its last win in 1998 (including the TWR-Porsche and Dauer-Porsche wins).

Mild hybrid engine technology uses an electric motor in conjunction with a gasoline engine, but unlike a traditional hybrid it cannot run solely on electricity. The mild hybrid electric motor boosts the gasoline engine when accelerating and modestly helps with fuel economy. There is no plug on the Range Rover to recharge the battery.

Porsche has presented the second generation of its Le Mans Prototype 919 Hybrid race car. Porsche 919 Hybrid, 2015. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery—developed by A123 Systems in cooperation with Porsche—temporarily stores converted braking energy from the front axle as well as converted exhaust-gas energy.
