In the first Shell Eco-marathon to take place in Asia, University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) took first place with 599 km per liter (1,410 mpg US, 0.17 L/100km) of gasoline equivalent, in an electric vehicle design that hybridized Horizon’s hydrogen fuel cells with an ultracapacitor. The “Urban Concept” category, introduced at the 2009 event, focuses on more “roadworthy” fuel-efficient vehicles. For both categories, teams can use any conventionally available energy source, including fuels such as diesel and gasoline as well as alternative fuels such as hydrogen, biomass, solar and, now, electric plug-in.

Experts from JAMA visited six countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) to share their recommended specifications of the two first-generation biofuels. For the use of ethanol-blended gasoline as conventional gasoline for vehicles, JAMA recommends a blending ratio of maximum 10% (E10).

More than 500 students in 44 participating teams participated in the event, a challenge for students to design, build and test fuel-efficient vehicles that travel the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel.
