The US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy today released the 2010 Fuel Economy Guide, which gives consumers information about estimated fuel costs and mileage standards for model year 2010 vehicles. For MY 2010, the Prius is the top fuel economy leader , with EPA ratings of 51/48 mpg city/highway.

The bio-based polyurethane foam will be one of the new features in the new Ford Explorer—which will also deliver fuel economy at least 25% better than the current model—which goes in to production later this year. Ford Mustang, F-150, Focus, Flex, Escape, Expedition and Econoline as well as Mercury Mariner, Lincoln MKS and Navigator also use the sustainable material. The 2 million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles on the road today with bio-foam seats equates to a reduction in petroleum oil usage of approximately 1.5 million pounds.

Ford notes that the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid’s projected fuel economy tops its nearest competitor—the 2010 Lexus HS 250h—by 6 mpg, while providing room for one more passenger and more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features.

Total Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales increased 33.5% Sales of the Escape and Mariner hybrids totalled 1,157 units in December, an increase of 0.7%, representing 5.2% of all Escape and Mariner sales. Total Escape and Mariner sales increased 56%, propelled by a 74.7% increase in Escape sales to 19,156 units.

The manufacturer has already added full hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan to its existing Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids. There is also expected to be a plug-in version of the Escape with the company testing plug-in versions currently in utility and government fleets.

Ford Motor Company’s US hybrid sales for the first nine months of 2009 are 73% higher than the same period in 2008, fueled by the introduction of hybrid versions of the 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, which went on sale in March 2009. The front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid delivers 34 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway.
