Additionally, research released last year by EPRI and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) pointed to the potential of PHEVs to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

SDG&E is part of a 48-utility coalition with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and General Motors to advance the deployment of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. In the future, plug-in electric vehicles will primarily charge off of 220-volt for faster charge time on larger batteries, SDG&E projected.

In an online blog, General Motors’ (GM) vice chairman Tom Stephens stated that the company will apply plug-in hybrid technology to one of its four core brands followings its’ restructuring. GM is planning initial delivery of plug-in hybrid vehicles for use in fleets to the DOE and EPRI in 2011.
