LNG engines currently being produced cover a broad range of power outputs. Engine concepts include gas-only engines; dual fuel 4-stroke; and 2-stoke. Methane slip during combustion is practically eliminated in modern 2-stroke engines, and further reductions should be expected from 4-stroke engines.

The city of Athens, in Greece, is buying 108 Mercedes Benz Econic natural gas vehicles which will be used in refuse collection across the city. The natural gas drive system produces up to 90 per cent fewer particulate emissions than an advanced diesel engine, meaning there is a substantial contribution to improving air quality.

4-cylinder engines and hybrid vehicles as a percent of cars sold in the US. In 2005, less than 30% of the vehicles purchased had four-cylinder engines, and in 2012, nearly half of those purchased had four cylinders. The largest improvement in efficiency between 2011 and 2012 was in Greece (9%) and Denmark (6%). Source: CFA.
