In a paper presented at the 2016 SAE World Congress, Tula Technology, developer of Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) cylinder deactivation technology, reported significant fuel economy gains of up to 18% over a conventional GM 6.2-liter Meaning, DSF reduces fuel consumption by 14-18% over V8. liter V8 by operating using Dynamic Skip Fire.

Unlike cylinder deactivation strategies that shut off a fixed number of cylinders, DSF makes dynamic firing decisions every 90 degrees of crank angle on a V8 (180 degrees on a 4 cylinder engine) based on how much torque is requested. DMD, for example, uses pulses of motor operation at high motor efficiency to deliver requested torque.
