Honda Motor Co. will begin selling the all-new Insight hybrid ( earlier post ) in Japan on Friday, 6 February, starting at ¥1,890,000 (~US$21,100). The Insight features a newly developed hybrid system including a 1.3-liter liter i-VTEC engine and Honda’s fifth-generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology.

Monthly fuel economy of the retrofitted Honda Civic during the first 9 months of the fleet test. DOE researchers attributed the significant fuel economy reduction for May, June, and July as most likely being due to significant mountain driving and the likely use of the vehicle’s air conditioning. Having already surpassed the Toyota Prius during its first month of sales in the UK, Honda’s Insight is now ranked as the best selling car among all new vehicle registrations in Japan in April marking the first time a hybrid model has been the top seller during any monthly sales period.

The Gen III Prius offers an EPA-rated combined cycle fuel economy of 50 mpg (now revealed to comprise 50 mpg city and 49 mpg highway). This is about a 10% improvement in EPA-rated combined cycle fuel economy over the older generation. Maximum system output, including the engine, is controlled to about 100 kW (134 hp).
