The scrappage scheme has put the car industry on track to meet the EU target of 130g/km of CO2 by 2012. That’s the verdict of Clean Green Cars , which launched an investigation that found that average new car CO2 fell by 5.5 km and Audi, which has cut its emissions by 9.6 per cent to 158.2g/km.

The new Toyota Prius is officially on sale in the UK now - and it has already been deemed a hit. The hybrid car, dubbed the car of the stars because of its popularity among Hollywood celebrities, has attracted a huge order book with almost 10 per cent of its orders made through the UK’s scrappage scheme.

The UK has been an epicentre for drivers with a green conscience for many years. Now it seems that its efforts have been rewarded.

Ostensibly, the scrappage scheme has been presented as an incentive to buy less polluting cars and therefore reduce damage to the environment.
