GE Transportation’s 4,500 th more fuel efficient Evolution Series Locomotive has entered revenue service. The Evolution Series represents a $400-million investment the most technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and low-emissions heavy haul freight locomotive to-date.

The results of an independent head-to-head fuel test between GE’s Evolution ES44AC and EMD’s SD70ACe Tier 2 emissions-compliant locomotives found that GE’s locomotives are more than 6% more fuel-efficient compared to their EMD counterparts. The head-to-head fuel tests were performed using reproducible and repeatable processes.

The deal will allow UAB Hydro2 to manufacture, sell and install the Save-Fuel On Demand Hydrogen Technology for the truck, bus and coach industries in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. As a result the engine burns fuel more efficiently and produces less particulate emissions and reduces the vehicle’s environmental impact.

Although the recovery in the world economy since 2009 has been uneven, and future economic prospects remain uncertain, global primary energy demand rebounded by a remarkable 5% in 2010, pushing CO 2 emissions to a new high. Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400 billion.
