What do you do with nickel-metal hydride batteries that were previously used in hybrid cars (pictured)? The Japanese carmaker is to start selling an electricity management system that makes use of the recycled batteries, starting from this April. Toyota has the answer.

That’s the verdict of a new report from Pike Research, which predicts a rapidly growing global market for electric vehicles – and particularly plug-in hybrid and battery electric cars. The report suggests that hybrid cars will be slow to move away from nickel-metal hydride batteries which have served them well so far.

The hybrid portion consists of three electric motor generators, MG1, MG2 and MGR. MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery.
