Material scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have found that certain graphene metal oxide (GMO) nanocomposites increase capacity and improve cycling performance in lithium-ion batteries. The team synthesized and compared the electrochemical performance of three representative graphene metal oxide nanocomposites—Fe 2 O 3 /graphene, SnO 2 /graphene, and TiO 2 /graphene—and found that two of them greatly improved reversible lithium storage capacity.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. delivered the first Clarity Fuel Cell, Honda’s new fuel cell vehicle (FCV) ( earlier post ), to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The Clarity Fuel Cell went on sale on 10 March 2016. The Clarity Fuel Cell is a five-passenger sedan-type FCV, realized by making the fuel cell powertrain more compact using original Honda technologies and fitting it entirely under the hood of the car.

Researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, in collaboration with colleagues from Toyota Motor Corporation, Tokyo Institute of Technology and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization Japan (KEK), have successfully designed and tested novel, high-power all-solid-state batteries with promising results. Daimler Trucks demonstrated the new Highway Pilot Connect system for autonomous truck platooning on the A52 autobahn near Düsseldorf. Three WiFi-connected, autonomously driving trucks operated on the autobahn with authorization for public traffic in a platoon formation. European new car registrations grew by 13.8% in February 2016, marking the 30 th consecutive month of year-on-year growth, according to figures from JATO Dynamics. The SUV segment continued to rule the market last month, gaining further market share at the expense of more traditional segments. In February, SUV registrations totalled 265,500 units, up by 31% compared to February 2015, and counting for 24.4% of the total European market.

The UK government-backed London Hydrogen Network Expansion project (LHNE) has broken two new distance records for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). ( Earlier post.). Working together, the partners of the LHNE project have broken the record for the longest journey in the UK on a single tank of hydrogen, travelling 400 miles (645 km), and have also broken the longest continuous journey for an FCEV by travelling 6,096 miles (9,811 km) over the course of six days.
