I’ve driven many a Prius over the years, and the 2023 version is the first one I’d even think about owning for any reason other than fuel mileage. I never thought I’d see the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl and I never thought Las Vegas would get a hockey team, let alone one that won a Stanley Cup just six seasons in.

A comparable SUV, such as a 2023 Ford Explorer AWD with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an EPA highway rating of 26 miles per gallon, would have used 69 gallons of gasoline. The fuel costs we saw posted during our trip averaged $4 per gallon for 87 octane, which would be $276 gasoline costs, so advantage electric, but not by much.

Toyota fully unveiled its fourth-generation Prius in an outdoor event Tuesday night in Las Vegas. Toyota did not provide specifics of fuel consumption and electric range, but confirmed that it expected a 10% improvement in EPA-estimated MPG on core models (51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway, 50 mpg combined for MY 2015).
