NREL study finds gasoline hybrid delivery trucks substantially reduce emissions and beat or maintain fuel economy compared to diesel vehicles

Green Car Congress

NREL’s Fleet Test and Evaluation Team recently completed a year-long technology evaluation of gasoline hybrid electric (gHEV) FedEx Express delivery trucks compared with conventional diesel vehicles. On drive cycles representing routes with fewer stops and accelerations, the gHEV trucks demonstrated similar fuel economy to the diesels.

Interim NREL Report on In-Use Azure Balance Gasoline Hybrids in FedEx Fleet Finds Substantially Lower Tailpipe Emissions, Similar Fuel Economy to Diesels

Green Car Congress

Fuel economy was similar between the gHEVs and diesel vehicles, except for the highest kinetic intensity drive cycle where the hybrid exhibited ~20% higher fuel economy. NREL started a 12-month in-use technology evaluation comparing in-use fuel economy and maintenance costs of gHEVs and comparative diesel parcel delivery trucks in April 2009.

Saft and ESMA to Cooperate on Supercapacitor Development, Production and Commercialization; Heavy Diesels First Target

Green Car Congress

By providing effective and reliable starting power for large diesel engines at low temperatures or in frequent stop-start usage the supercapacitors will allow the vehicle battery to be optimized for the application. Furthermore, the performance of a supercapacitor remains stable over a very wide temperature range (typically -40 °C to +70 °C).

FTA Report on Worldwide H2 Bus Demonstrations Finds Better Than Expected Performance and Strong Customer Acceptance; Challenges Remain

Green Car Congress

Most participants noted that developing fuel cell bus maintenance facilities was not as challenging as expected. Diesel buses typically operate for 18 to 20 hours per day, over a range of about 186-217 miles (300-350 km), using one tank of fuel. Key challenges to commercialization revealed by the demonstrations were: Vehicle Range.
