The US Department of Energy is awarding $620 million for projects around the country to demonstrate advanced Smart Grid technologies and integrated systems. The selected projects include advanced battery systems (including flow batteries), flywheels, and compressed air energy systems. Tehachapi Wind Energy Storage Project.

Ford, Detroit Edison and Xtreme Power are teaming up to establish one of Michigan’s largest solar power generation systems and electric vehicle charging stations at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. Ford will work with Detroit Edison to install a 500 kW solar photovoltaic panel system at Michigan Assembly.

But after interviewing Ford’s Nancy Gioia at the recent Detroit Auto show, I’m now unsure of both the timescales involved, or how much the power and auto companies are behind it as a fundamental concept. Finally there may be new energy storage that requires less lithium. Cheers — Al Louard 11.
