(PAG) has terminated its discussions with General Motors Company to acquire the Saturn brand, citing concerns directly related to the future supply of vehicles beyond the supply period it had negotiated with GM. Today’s disappointing news comes at a time when we’d hoped for a successful launch of the Saturn brand into a new chapter.

AMP, which currently up fits Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice vehicles, is targeting the Nissan Leaf, with its 100 mile range, as its closest rival. AMP, working in conjunction with a local GM dealer, is taking orders for the electric Equinox now, and expects the fully-converted vehicle to be available for a June 2010 delivery.

Nissan’s Leaf stood alone as an EV. Good examples of all-new electric cars are the Nissan Leaf battery-electric and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid , which both debuted in 2010 as 2011 models. During this same time GM created Saturn , a totally new brand, which arrived in 1990 with its own showrooms, advertising and vehicles.

GM dealers delivered 189,443 total vehicles in July, a 19.4% Non-core brand sales declined when compared with June as Pontiac dipped 7%; Saturn was down 21%, and HUMMER and Saab declined 26%. Nissan North America reported sales for July of 71,847 units, a decrease of 24.6%. Nissan sold 1,030 units of the Altima hybrid, up 44.1%

The Equator was a Smyrna-built Nissan Frontier with a slightly different grille and Suzuki badges, period. Saab dealers were issued rebadged Trailblazers and Subaru Imprezas , because what the hell, and Saturn offered Opels that few wanted. So, it was a single Grant cheaper than its twin from the same Tennessee assembly line.
