The system was built using batteries reclaimed from electrified vehicles (HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV) and is connected to the consumer electrical power grid. That contributes to reducing costs and helps avoid power loss when converting from AC to DC by PCS, with the aim of improving effective energy use.

They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries. Most importantly, these vehicles are not representative of the lithium-ion battery-powered next-generation Prius PHVs that will be delivered to lease-fleet customers later this year.

Combining these sales projections with those for PHEVs, FCEVs, LSEVs and fully-electric vehicles, Roskill expects that close to 70% of new passenger sales will have some degree of electrification by 2027. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) such as the Toyota Prius have been an important market for nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

The lithium-ion battery comprises 168 prismatic cells and is liquid-cooled. The Q7 PHEV will arrive in dealerships in Germany in 2016, and will likely come to the US, although perhaps with a gasoline-engine variant. Its emphasis is on lithium-ion battery systems, which are put together using a flexible, modular concept.
