REV, a Vancouver, Canada company that converts Ford fleet vehicles into highway capable battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles ( earlier post ), has become the first Hymotion plug-in conversion kit dealer in Canada. It is now offering the Hymotion L5 plug-in conversion system for Toyota Prius owners in BC.

Porsche sees this new type of “E-Performance”—more power, more driving fun, lower fuel consumption—as the performance kit of the future. This transmission replaces the eight-speed automatic torque converter transmission on the predecessor model. New hybrid module and fast-shifting eight-speed PDK.

The XL1 is not a product of any of Volkswagen’s modular Baukästen (assembly kits such as the MQB, MLB or MSB, earlier post ). Nonetheless, some of the learnings from the XL1 will flow back to inform the evolution of the different kits, such as to the MQB which has its own plug-in hybrid powertrain, to make its debut in the A3.

In was eager to get the new DC-DC converter installed so I left work a bit early and got to work so I could still drive the car to breakfast with my girlfriend tomorrow morning. The DC-DC converter fits rather nicely in the old space. Here's a closer view of the top of the Iota DLS-45 converter. The new converter is dead silent.

Put another way, the fuel cell technology is being developed so as to work as components in the MQB (transverse) kit, the development of which is led by the Volkswagen brand, and the MLB (longitudinal) kit being driven by Audi. In a PEM fuel cell, hydrogen is supplied to the anode, where it is broken down into protons and electrons.

Battery electric vehicles are a great technology but like the fax machine they are only temporary and there is a great deal of consumer resistance towards them for all manner of reasons, including range and the time it takes to recharge them. So as well as producing a clean fuel we would be reducing the amount of waste we put into landfill.
