After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. This project started about a month ago when I became co-chair of the Oregon Electric Vehicles Association.

More than 215 PHEVs, representing 12 different PHEV models—mostly conversions—have made up the PHEV test fleet to date. Take Nick Fornero, 30, from Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. Jason Hanely from Oregon, Ohio was the only fan I spoke to with strong specific complaints, but he also said "everything has been great so far." Those conversations took place before the race. Fans, too, seemed pretty happy with the event.

The Oregon Legislature is contemplating bills that provide credits for both manufacturers and purchasers of electric cars. Oregon cant afford to play that game, or at least not at those levels, but McCabe thinks it remains a serious contender for Norwegian electric car manufacturer Think.
