The Sunlight Fuels agreement is the first IH 2 FEL-2 license granted in India for a commercial-scale plant. Bagasse is the fibrous residue remaining after the extraction of juice from the crushed stalks of sugarcane. CRI has been granted exclusive worldwide licensing rights.

To process the soluble sugars that accumulate in the plants, the sorghum juice was first extracted from the stems and concentrated into sugar syrup by Ceres. The joint evaluation project was funded in part by a US Department of Energy Integrated Biorefinery grant awarded to Amyris. The grant included a sub-contract award to Ceres.

Iogen Energy, the original owner of the technology, has granted comprehensive licenses to both Raízen and Iogen Corp. Iogen will provide cellulosic ethanol related process technology, process designs and start-up and operational services to Raízen through their jointly owned Iogen Energy affiliate.
