Waste gasification company Sierra Energy closes $33M Series A funding; FastOx

Green Car Congress

The funding will help Sierra Energy further develop and commercialize its FastOx gasification technology, which converts virtually any waste into clean, renewable energy and fuels without burning. Waste is fed into the top of the gasifier vessel through an airlock. Purified oxygen and steam are injected into the base.

UC Davis process produces gasoline-range hydrocarbons from biomass-derived levulinic acid; field-to-tank yield of >60% claimed

Green Car Congress

GC-MS chromatogram of the liquid products obtained after hydrodeoxygenation of angelica lactone dimer. Considering that levulinic acid is available with more than 80% conversion from raw biomass, a field-to-tank yield of drop-in, cellulosic gasoline of more than 60% is possible, the researchers claimed. Caltech engineers devise new thermochemical cycle for water splitting for H2; recyclable, non-toxic, non-corrosive and at lower temperatures

Green Car Congress

Providing a possible new route to hydrogen-gas production, researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have devised a new manganese-based thermochemical cycle with a highest operating temperature of 850?°C Davis’ first paper as a graduate student dealt with the sulfur-iodine low-temperature water-splitting cycle.).

DOE awards $35M to 15 projects in ARPA-E ECOSynBio program to reduce carbon footprint of biofuel production

Green Car Congress

Many biofuels, including ethanol, biodiesel and other products derived from organic material (biomass), are almost exclusively produced via fermentation. These fermentation processes create carbon as a byproduct, with some processes wasting more than 1/3 of this carbon as CO 2 emissions. The awardees are: LanzaTech, Inc.

California Energy Commission awards $750K to Electricore to study standardization of plug-in vehicle batteries

Green Car Congress

University of California, Davis was awarded $900,000 to investigate emissions and leakages within California’s natural gas infrastructure. Anaergia Services of Carlsbad received $395,121 to demonstrate a process which will convert green waste into renewable natural gas. The project includes $437,093 in match funding from Anaergia.

Argonne LCA finds renewable diesel from algae fractionation has 63-68% lower GHG than petroleum diesel

Green Car Congress

In some algal biofuel production methods, lipids are extracted from algae and converted to renewable diesel, while the non-lipid components of the algae are converted to biogas. The biogas is used for renewable heat and electricity to power the conversion process of the lipids to renewable diesel. Fractionation process flow diagram.

Novel pathway for aviation fuel from food waste–derived volatile fatty acids (VFA) could lead to 70% blends, up to 165% reduction in GHG

Green Car Congress

Life cycle analysis showed up to 165% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions relative to fossil jet if the food waste is diverted from landfills to produce VFA-SAF. Techno-economic analysis evaluated the major catalytic process cost-drivers, determining the minimum fuel selling price as a function of VFA production costs.
