EV Engineering in Australia ( earlier post ) recently unofficially broke the distance record for a production electric car, achieving 1,886 (1,172 miles) kilometers of driving over a 24-hour period.

When the batteries reach a predetermined state of discharge, the Capstone C30 microturbine fires up and recharges the batteries on the fly to extend the driving range up to 500 miles. The US DOE and BIRD selected a product development effort by Capstone Turbine and Israel’s HelioFocus Ltd. seconds and has a top speed of 150 mph.

Current consortium members include Accenture ( ACN ), Current Group, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories and Ventyx. Driving range will no longer be an obstacle, because customers will be able to plug their cars into charging units in any of the 500,000 charging spots in Israel. Smart meters and substations will be integral.

Sven Thesen, the communication and technology director for Better Place , a start-up that is gaining traction (see this recent New York Times article ) in its effort to create a network for electric cars in various countries, likened the concept of electric cars to cellphones. Since the turn of the month PSA Peugeot Citroen and Renault have been dominating headlines by revealing plans for a series of green car concepts. The batteries can be recharged in six hours or to 80 per cent capacity in 30minutes using a fast charge system. However, the company can boast a number of exciting green concepts of its own.
