UPS will deploy a prototype extended range Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in its Rolling Laboratory fleet of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. Each FCEV produces electricity which continuously charges its batteries, thereby providing additional power and an extended range of 125 miles.

In its report of first quarter 2021 financial results and outlook, Lordstown Motors, a startup developing electric light duty trucks focused on the commercial fleet market ( earlier post ), said that the expected production of its Endurance full-size electric pickup in 2021 will be limited—at best 50% of prior expectations.

Supported by a $3-million California Energy Commission grant, the companies are working to convert a fleet of six, Class-6 International armored trucks into “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles—PHEV trucks that operate with electricity and renewable natural gas (RNG).

Ford plans to introduce a Transit Custom PHEV van on the market in 2019; the Transit Custom PHEV vans in the London trial are an advanced prototype design that allows them to be charged with mains electricity for zero-emission journeys, while featuring an efficient on-board combustion engine for extended range when longer trips are required.
