Not to be outdone, GWR followed up with a second journey in the battery-electric Class 230 train, completing a 70-mile trek from Long Marston to the Reading Train Care Depot while using only 45% of its total capacity.

Peripheral circumstances are different everywhere, says TNT CO2 manager Mr Bjorn Sawilla. In London we have congestion charge, plus a customer dense network. Together with Electric Mobility Netherlands (Elmonet) Urgenda tries to stimulate large-scale introduction of (non-converted) EVs on the Dutch roads.

That would require a dramatic increase in EV sales: In the United States in 2021, just over 1 million vehicles—less than 1 percent of those on the road—were fully electric. And only 3 percent of the new vehicles sold were fully electric. Congestion charges have been levied in Stockholm and London to limit car traffic.
