Toyota’s trial of 20 plug-in hybrid versions of its Prius model to businesses and organisations in London is already resulting in ‘encouraging’, real-world data which shows the fuel and CO2 emission saving potential of the technology, the car maker says.

Green car hire firm, greentomatocars will take delivery of the very first third generation Toyota Prius in London today and to celebrate the firm is offering free passage to customers. On Friday 14 August, any lucky customer that travels in the new Prius won’t have to pay for their journey.

The title of WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2009 has been awarded to the ‘next generation’ Toyota Prius, due to be launched in the UK on 1 st August 2009. The new Prius was chosen from a short-list of 10 green car finalists which were test-driven at Imperial College, London, by six of the UK’s leading green transport and environmental experts.

Peripheral circumstances are different everywhere, says TNT CO2 manager Mr Bjorn Sawilla. In London we have congestion charge, plus a customer dense network. But they are without a doubt the most promising form of inner city pick up and delivery, because they have zero emission. In the Netherlands TNT is still piloting EVs.
