In 1997, the Toyota Prius was released as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid. In the future, autonomous vehicles and battery-powered technology could work together to create cleaner, more efficient roads. The pros of going gasless include reduced maintenance costs, lower fuel expense and—most importantly—less pollution.

In a Prius or Civic Hybrid at 50mpg, the trip would have cost about $30 in gas, tolls and parking in Sacto. At 20 lbs of carbon emissions per gallon of gasoline burned (US Energy Information Administration estimate), a Prius or Civic would have released about 80 lbs of carbon for this one round trip.

And ultimately, you can get no cleaner car than an electric car using wind or solar generated electricity. But in the end, there is no further pollution using the electricity, whether in iPods, toasters, light rail, or cars. That includes the worst, most coal dependent areas. We can make electricity many ways, some better than others.

So youll have a cleaner, cheaper, quieter car for your local travel, and the gas tank is always there should you need to drive longer distances. What Are Plug-In Hybrids? You dont have to plug it in.

In coordination with local air officials, the California Air Resources Board is initiating a retire-and-replace pilot program in the Greater Los Angeles area and San Joaquin Valley to help people of low income replace old, polluting cars with cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles that also cut greenhouse gas emissions.
