The air would be cleaner, and people could knock out two birds with one stone, fueling their ride while tending to other necessary chores. Parking lots seem logical places for solar farms, blocking the sun’s rays from baking vehicle interiors and converting that energy to usable power to make the cars run. The power potntial is there.

GE Energy has signed a technology licensing agreement with Hydrogen Energy (HEI) for a proposed 250-megawatt power plant that would use integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) technology. EPA will also expand energy conservation and efficiency programs and continue to develop solutions for reducing GHG emissions from large stationary sources like power plants. EPA will finalize its mobile source GHG rules under the Clean Air Act, and “ provide a framework for continued improvements in that sector.” ( Earlier post. ).

The basic question addressed, which appears on the study homepage (epri-reports.org) is this: How would air quality and greenhouse gas emissions be affected if significant numbers of Americans drove cars that were fueled by the power grid? And the grid is getting cleaner and more renewable every year.

Look at the periodic table, and think of the elements needed for a prosperous planet powered by renewable energy. The minerals that contain sulfur often also tend to contain toxic metals like mercury, arsenic, and thallium. As dirty as it sounds, it’s actually cleaner than mining.

That figure does not include damages from climate change, harm to ecosystems, effects of some air pollutants such as mercury, and risks to national security, which the report examines but does not monetize.
