I attended today’s Bryan Cave Clean Tech Roundtable at the Broad Stage at Santa Monica College – thanks to my pal Donna Gentry. It attracted a lot of attention but so did his comments during the “Clean Technology in California: Opportunities and Challenges&# panel to start the day.

The new options would reduce some economic and procedural impediments to clean alternative fuel conversions while maintaining environmental safeguards to ensure that acceptable emission levels from converted vehicles are sustained. The EcoDual technology enables existing diesel engines to be converted to operate on up to 85% natural gas, providing fuel cost savings and emission reductions. The cost of the dual fuel system can be recovered in operational savings within one year without any government incentives, the company says.

EPA evaluated the requirement and determined that it is appropriate to introduce new flexibilities for all clean alternative fuel converters and to expand the compliance options for certain categories of conversions. The revised procedures will vary based on the age of the vehicle or engine being converted.

If we can design better thermoelectric materials, we will be able to reduce the energy consumption of cars by converting waste heat in exhausts into electrical power, as well as cooling hot spots on computer chips using solid state refrigerators.
