These examples of versatility explain why we call the PHEV a new paradigm. It is alarming to see comparisons of the Chevrolet Volt PHEV with battery electric cars when the comparison focuses only on the electric range and ignores the other important differences. Already the Chevrolet Volt is moving us in that direction.

In January GM announced the Volt, a smart idea that makes use of the two existing primary energy infrastructures - the electric grid and gasoline stations. As it struggles to get even one car on the road, GM is in Shanghai spinning the future, as reported in the Detroit News. Lutz says GM hopes to have one working car by year's end.
