Honda have produced the Honda FCX Clarity FCEV, a hydrogen powered Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), which they are leasing in limited numbers to selected customers in specially selected locations only. There are several reasons for this approach and understanding a little more about fuel cell vehicles may explain why.

Honda has the Clarity models, initially a fuel cell electric that was expanded to include a plug-in hybrid, full electric and fuel cell electric. Not easy or cheap, but it has worked so far. This is much the same way as they made the Hyundai Genesis into the Genesis brand a few years ago. Create a New EV Company.

Alfa Romeo Tonale – the Italian brand finally has a rechargeable car in its ranks in the form of the Tonale PHEV compact SUV. Aston Martin DBX PHEV and EV – electrified versions of AM’s first SUV on the cards. No surprises there are promises of big performance for a PHEV due late in 2022 or early 2023.

When IEEE Spectrum’s editor in chief, Harry Goldstein, needed to replace his 2008 Honda Fit in October 2020, he thought seriously about buying an electric vehicle. Next, assuming that the same 2:1 BEV-to-PHEV ratio reported by the MnDOT EV Dashboard holds as well, then there are about 600 BEVs owned by renters in Minneapolis.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Millions of EVs and PHEVs would expand the sale of electricity as an alternative to oil.
