As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling. The Europeans have placed their bet on the more efficient diesel engine, achieving mpg ratings in excess of the Prius without the complication and expense of hybridization.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. The plug-in Priuses are almost doubling the fuel efficiency of Google standard Prius fleet, getting 74 MPG rather than 41 MPG.

How does this sound: 100+ MPG in a regular vehicle? They reinforce the Pacific National Labs January 2007 findings that we wont have to build new power plants for cars that charge at night. At $3 for a gallon of gas, driving a non-hybrid car costs 8-20 cents/mile (depending on MPG). What Are Plug-In Hybrids?
