The facility, part of Marathon’s 50/50 joint venture with Neste, utilizes Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology to convert bio-feedstock into renewable diesel. With HydroFlex, customers can convert low-value feedstocks into drop-in renewable jet and diesel that meets all globally accepted specifications for these fuels.

Burning methane by flaring as it is released converts it to carbon dioxide, another greenhouse gas but one that is less harmful on a pound-by-pound basis. Multiple flares observed in operation in the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin in North Dakota, 2021. A paper on the work is published in Science.

The project, which is expected to be operational in 2023, will convert renewable energy from one of EGPNA’s solar plants in the United States into green hydrogen to be supplied to a bio-refinery. In the US, the company is focused on states with an existing operational presence, such as Texas, Utah and North Dakota.
