California’s the First State to Hit One Million EVs. And I’m one those million since they’re counting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as full battery electrics. The California mix for 2021 was interesting, with many of a few vehicles and a few of many. Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988.

However, in California, as gas prices have soared and EV technology has continued to improve, we’ve started to see larger fuel savings on the back end, greater accessibility to charging stations, and a jump in electric vehicle popularity. Which brings us to Tesla. Tesla’s electric vehicles are by far the most popular EVs in the country.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

PG&E services the San Francisco area and Northern California. Darbee noted that although California has about 12% of the population, it has about 25% of the demand for plug-in hybrids. He said that they thought it very likely that California and Northern California would be the epicenter for the PEV market.
