Twenty years ago today, the very first GM EV1 electric cars were delivered to 40 lessees in California in a blaze of publicity. That first EV1 was a high-tech two-seater created specifically to meet California's then-current zero-emission vehicle rules.

It occurred in the wake of the California electricity crisis of 2000 and 2001, when mismanaged deregulation, market manipulation, and environmental catastrophe combined to unhinge the power grid. The vehicle inspired California’s ZEV mandate, instituted in 1990. AC Propulsion’s experiment was timely.

Electric car proponents at The California Cars Initiative believe the task force was unduly influenced by “plug-in skeptics” at the Boston Consulting Group , which is under government contract to provide input on the prospects for G.M. They are evidently conspiring with the oil companies otherwise why else would they destroy the EV1s.
