Tesla reduced the price of its Model 3 earlier in 2023. Earlier this month Tesla dropped the Model 3’s price by up to $3100 , and the Model Y’s by up to $3400. With seemingly every other car manufacturer bumping up prices to reflect more demand than supply, Tesla’s doing well at winning hearts and minds.

At this price level, the Wuling EV is a disruptive force in urban mobility, not only against 4-wheeled private transportation, but also against 2 and 3-wheelers. Oh, and if we were to add the 3,082 units of the PHEV version, then the Han would have been 3rd, with 11,483 units, not bad for a flagship model, right?

While BEVs were a hot item last month, jumping 81%, to a record 407.000 units, PHEVs were even hooter, shooting 205% in December, allowing them to end the year with 31% of plugin sales, up 5% from the 26% of 2019, giving credit to those that say that PHEVs will still be around for a while. But more on that later.

Plugin hybrids (PHEVs) took just 4.8% PHEV’s relatively low share was not due to their fall in volume, rather that the volume of BEVs and petrol vehicles were much higher than usual. Furthermore, from 1st of January, VAT is being applied for the portion of a BEV’s price that exceeds a 500,000 NOK (~ €47,000) threshold.

Research has shown that the clean car discount is popular with New Zealanders, so let’s keep it going until we get close to price parity between EVs and petrol cars. This is still just 1.5% of the entire vehicle fleet. There’s more to do. This discount won’t be needed forever – perhaps only another few years.
