BYD delivered the first all-electric automated side loader refuse truck to the City of Palo Alto and GreenWaste, the city’s waste hauler service. The BYD electric refuse truck uses its batteries for propulsion, as well as to power the hydraulic system for the body.

According to SupChina.com , the 10 largest EV producers in China based on domestic sales are: Tesla BYD SAIC Motor SAIC Volkswagen SAIC-GM-Wuling NIO Xpeng Li Auto WM Motor Geely. BYD already sells electric buses in the US though its bus division, but they are also made in California in a factory employing 750 unionized workers.

For all the fanfare, sales of electric cars are currently negligible (outside of golf courses, that is). Warren Buffett is an investor in China’s BYD, which is making a compact fully electric vehicle to be sold in China later this year. NEV stands for neighborhood electric vehicle, which can travel at a top speed of 25 mph.

Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. They have several stations already built and plan on thousands more.
