The Trends report has been published annually since 1975 and covers all passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans, and all but the largest pickup trucks and vans. EPA obtains the detailed data supporting the report directly from automobile manufacturers; the agency has been collecting and maintaining these data since 1975.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. Honda Sees PHEVs as having "unnecessary fuel engine and fuel tank;" promises all-electrics "assuming we can come up with a really high-performing battery that we are working on currently." BYD also developed the motors and software for the system.
