The MG4 is now the second cheapest EV on-sale in Australia alongside the MG ZS Excite SUV, which is also $39,990 drive-away. GWM has also slashed pricing for the rest of the Ora range (see below), and the company says this is a permanent change and not a promotional discount as had been previously applied.

Local executives say the numbers don’t currently add up on the Ora Sport that was expected to sell from about $60,000, popping it squarely in the crosshairs of the hot-selling Tesla Model 3 and its closest rival, the BYD Seal. We will consider the EV SUV and the Ora Sport is still under study.”

Back then , the plucky electric SUV had the mainstream EV market more to itself. But now, it faces challenges from the BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV beneath it, and the Tesla Model Y above it. The same car with a bigger 64.8kWh battery, called the Kona Electric Extended Range, is $58,000, which is $2500 cheaper than the model it replaces, too.

Rather than establish Ora as its own brand, the Chinese manufacturing giant decided to bring it under the GWM banner, as it has done with its Haval SUVs and upcoming Tank off-road wagons. Pricing for the GWM Ora varies across the country, ranging up to $47,891 in Western Australia, where local taxes make it more expensive.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform.
