In a post on Toyota’s Open Road blog, Irv Miller, Toyota Group Vice President – Environmental and Public Affairs, wrote that contrary to some recent reports, Toyota has yet to offer mileage estimates on its plug-in hybrid technology. They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries.

We will have similar solutions available for better (but more expensive) nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries.) to demonstrate its PRIUS+ approach using nickel-metal hydride batteries, in response to automakers continuing comments that "the batteries arent ready."

The upcoming plug-in Prius will use the traditional nickel metal hydride battery system, but future versions will likely see the addition of a lithium ion battery pack. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model.

Until then, we also recommend you look at the FAQ at the Climate Progress Blog and the FAQ by Hybrids-Plus , an after-market converter of hybrid cars, for answers to many questions! Toyotas Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are considered "non-hazardous waste" [See "high voltage electrical systems" ].
