Plug-in hybrid operating modes with the 2MH4EV architecture. GM has developed a prototype of its two-mode front-wheel drive (FWD) hybrid transmission ( earlier post ) with enhanced electric vehicle capability (2MH4EV) for application in a plug-in hybrid; GM presented a paper detailing the work at the SAE 2011 World Congress in Detroit.

During a media event in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen provided a medium dive into details of its two-seater XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle diesel plug-in hybrid ( earlier post ) as well as some driving time on local roads and highways. kWh Li-ion battery pack. The entire hybrid unit is housed between the driven rear wheels.

This new company, Bright Automotive , is founded by ex-GM EV1 people, and the super efficient Rocky Mountain Institute to make plug-in hybrids in Indiana. Andy Frank makes the observation that parallel hybrids (Toyota Prius) are cheaper than series hybrids (Chevy Volt). I’m still not convinced.

The 2011 start date has been chosen to coincide with theexpected introduction of a wider variety of electric and plug-in hybrid carsin Britain. Electric cars remain dependent on the development of better,affordable batteries. How far hybrids will be encouraged in the new government initiative remains tobe seen.
