If just one out of five urban residents in Europe permanently changed from driving to cycling, emissions from automobiles would be cut by 8 percent, the study reports. Owning a reliable automobile has long been one of the only successful means of getting out of poverty. That’s especially true if you are a poor urbanite.

It will appear in Europe next year as the Opel Ampera and in Australia as the Holden Volt in 2012. Companies can not sell engineering prototypes in which the company got R&D tax breaks in developing the product.
