Again this is true as the batteries used were originally NiMH but are now progressing to lithium-ion with some even able to hit 0-60mph in four seconds. The NiMH batteries used in most hybrid cars currently are fully recyclable. The replacement cost of a NiMH battery pack is typically $2,500-$3,000 but they rarely need to be replaced.

The auto industry has disappointed before when it comes to green technology. Regardless, GM ought to be producing the Volt now with the best available batteries, a PHEV-version of the NiMH in every hybrid on the road and which took the EV1 140 miles between charges. Interest in plug-in cars of all sorts is real and growing.

VW, Daimler subsidiary Daug and Varta developed a NimH battery in the early 90s, and the VW group put the Audi duo hybrid on the road in 1997. However, Winterkorn said, VW, and the German auto industry in general, abandoned the early advantage and work in electromobility. And the auto industry doesn’t hold back on announcements.

Lithium-Ion batteries share many characteristics with NiMH. Objections have come from those who say that this name puts advocates on the defensive to auto industry views that plugging in is bad (Ads for hybrids emphasize that "you dont have to plug it in."). What about battery safety?

2010 Prius designed to be manufactured with NiMH or Lithium batteries. The Omori factory currently produces NiMH cells. Agrees on environmental and economic benefits, though some presentations backtrack on that; says batteries need further development before commitment to mass-production.
