According to reports in the Detroit News , General Motors has decided to produce the Cadillac Converj, which will be an extended range electric vehicle derived from the Voltec platform. The concept car originally made its debut earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show.

The auto industry is now gearing up to hash out those standards at the SAE conference in Detroit next week — and GM has a major stake in getting them out swiftly. According to GM, the updated standard can be expected by the end of the summer — just in time, perhaps, for the first production prototypes of the Chevy Volt.

The announcement marks the single largest investment in advanced battery technology for hybrid and electric-drive vehicles ever made. Industry officials expect that this $2.4 billion in cost-share from the award winners, will result directly in the creation tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the US battery and auto industries.
