Nissan Pathfinder: Argh. While it’s not as legendary of a nameplate as other icons of motoring, the Pathfinder was once a rugged body-on-frame SUV that could go just about anywhere, it’s now a minivan without the utility of a minivan. That it’s such a massive vehicle and yet has but four seats is inexcusable, too.

Three European brands, Audi, BMW, and Mini, round out the top 10. Audi and BMW both declined from last year. While the Chrysler 300 improves to “Average,” the Pacifica minivan falls to “Below-Average.” Audi tumbled three spots to seven on the list. Volvo finished last overall. Chrysler drops seven spots to number 24.

The Trends report has been published annually since 1975 and covers all passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans, and all but the largest pickup trucks and vans. More are coming to the US market, such as the Audi A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid and Volkswagen e-Golf BEV. They comprise the most comprehensive database of its kind.

Nissan’s Leaf stood alone as an EV. Good examples of all-new electric cars are the Nissan Leaf battery-electric and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid , which both debuted in 2010 as 2011 models. Next up will be the ID.Buzz electric minivan. There is no all-electric or gas-only Prius—that’s not its identity.
