Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have performed life cycle assessments (LCA) of three batteries for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full performance battery electric (BEV) vehicles. They also found higher life cycle global warming emissions than have been previously reported. —Majeau-Bettez et al.

Interest in plug-in cars of all sorts is real and growing. However, as the article points out, it feels like a trip down a well-traveled green road to nowhere. Tags: GM electric car plug-in hybrid chevy volt fuel cell. "GM tries to unplug Volt hype" is not the headline I've been hoping to see out of Motor City this spring.

Lutz responds to the sense that GM might be pulling back from its commitment to the Volt that resulted from Sharon Terlep's Detroit News article a month or so ago. (My Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." My take at the time here.) This makes no sense.

Second, and the point on which the article devotes most attention, is whether Nissan is "cutting corners" by forgoing an active thermal management (HVAC) system for the batteries. At least with NiMH, Toyota's passive system worked out better in the real world.

Usually devoted to crass boosterism of America's largest manufacturing industry, these articles still contain a lot of that. The meme of the ugly green car gets its own article ( Once Frumpy, Green Cars Start Showing Some Flash ).
